  • Introduction & Background

The battlecruiser HMS Hood (Hull Number: 51) was the last battlecruiser built for the Royal Navy.

As the only completed ship of the Admiral-class battlecruisers, HMS Hood had a standard displacement of 41,785 tons at the time of commissioning, making it the largest warship in the world. Armed with four twin-mounted 381 mm main guns and capable of reaching a speed of 31 knots, it was considered the pride of the Royal Navy. During its service, it frequently served as a ceremonial ship showcasing British prestige on global tours, most notably during the "Empire Cruise" from November 27, 1923, to September 28, 1924.

HMS Hood was laid down at John Brown & Company on September 1, 1916, launched on August 22, 1918, and commissioned on May 15, 1920. On May 24, 1941, Hood and the battleship HMS Prince of Wales were deployed to intercept the German battleship Bismarck. During the ensuing Battle of the Denmark Strait, a 380 mm shell from Bismarck penetrated Hood's deck armor, detonating its ammunition magazine and causing the ship to split in half and sink.
