  • Introduction & Background

The U.S. M10 "Wolverine" GMC, a WWII tank destroyer based on the M4 Sherman chassis with a 3-inch (76.2 mm) gun, featured an open-topped turret for reduced weight and enhanced mobility, excelling in countering enemy tanks. The U.S. 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, initially equipped with T70s (M18 Hellcats) and later re-equipped with M10s (and subsequently M36 Jacksons with 90 mm guns), landed at Omaha Beach on June 11, 1944. Trained to ambush enemy tanks via speed and firepower rather than heavy armor, the battalion played key roles in Normandy campaigns (including breakout and Mortain counter-offensive), the Falaise Pocket encirclement, and operations in Belgium and Germany (Siegfried Line, Ruhr and Rhine River crossings, reaching the Elbe). The M10 provided the battalion with a mobile, firepower-rich platform to effectively counter German armored threats during critical Allied European offensives.
